  6. This  is  probably the most famous virus checker on the Amiga, maybe even
  7. the best?  If your asking what a virus is or what a virus checker is then
  8. you should get this program now as you will most likely need it.

  10. What is a Computer Viruses ?
  11. A computer virus is usually a small program than can duplicate itself and
  12. copy  itself  to  many  different  floppy disks, hard disks, in fact most
  13. mediums  that  are  writeable  can  be infected with a virus.  During the
  14. process of copying itself the virus usually causes some sort of damage to
  15. your  files, this could be deleting a file, formatting your hard drive or
  16. some other malicious act.  The only way to stop this from happening is to
  17. find the virus and delete it.  This is where Virus Checker comes in.

  19. Types of Virus

  21. Boot-Block virus.
  22. This virus is the most common on the Amiga and is very easy to detect.  A
  23. Boot-  Block  is  the section of a floppy disk that holds information for
  24. Amiga-DOS.   This  information tells Amiga-DOS what type of disk and file
  25. system is in use.  What a Boot-Block virus does is to amend itself to the
  26. Boot-Block  so when your disk is booted the virus is loaded straight into
  27. ram.  The virus then sits in ram and waits for a different floppy disk to
  28. be  inserted  in  to a drive.  When one is inserted the virus then writes
  29. itself  to  that  disk.   So  in time your entire floppy collection could
  30. become  infected  with viruses.  After you use the infected disk(s) a few
  31. times  the  virus  usually destroys some data on that disk thus making it
  32. unusable.

  34. File virus/link virus.
  35. A file virus is a file that when run will infect other files on your hard
  36. drive  or  floppy  disks.   These files when infected are still usable as
  37. standard   but   carry  a  deadly  secrete.   Most  file  virus  carry  a
  38. timer/counter and when they have been activated a certain amount of times
  39. they  will  destroy data, format hard drives etc.  These viruses are very
  40. hard to spot unless you use a good virus checker.

  42. Trojan Virus
  43. This  is  a  program  that  looks and works like it should but in time it
  44. becomes  a active virus.  Most do strange things to the floppy drives and
  45. hard  drives.   An  example  of this is a Pirate copy of DiskSalv V3 that
  46. works fine but after a few goes it will format you HD.  I MUST STATE THAT
  47. DiskSalv  V3  IS  A BRILLIANT PROGRAM AND IS WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD AND
  48. THE  VERSION  WITH  THE  TROJAN  VIRUS  ON  HAS  NOTHING  TO  DO WITH THE
  49. PUBLISHERS,  but  if  you  haven't  got  the original then in my eyes you
  50. deserve what you get.

  52. Virus Checker is (as its name implies) a virus checker/killer.  What this
  53. program  does  is to scan your floppy disks, hard drives etc for viruses.
  54. The way it does this is to load and examine each and every file to see if
  55. it  is  a  virus or to check if the file is infected with a virus.  If it
  56. finds  a virus it will then inform you and either delete the virus and/or
  57. fix the infected file.  Virus checker will also check packed files and if
  58. you are a registered user it will also check .lha files.

  60. On  starting  Virus  Checker the first thing the program does is to check
  61. your  memory  to see if any viruses are there it will then check you hard
  62. drives  and floppy disks for viruses if you ask it to.  Alternatively you
  63. can  tell it to check your hard drives and floppy drives as soon as it is
  64. activated.   Virus  Checker  comes  with  full  AmigaGuide  documentation
  65. listing and explaining all the option of the program as well as a list of
  66. the Viruses it knows and can deal with.

  68. Well  thats about it but incase you are wondering where most viruses come
  69. from,  they  can  usually be found on most Pirate software, and as I said
  70. before if you use Pirate software then you deserve all you get.

  72. And  to  those  people  who  say 'I use loads of Pirate software and have
  73. never  had a virus', well your just kidding yourself as you don't know if
  74. you have a virus till its too late.
